The Scottish Crannog Centre

The fascinating Scottish Crannog Centre is around a 20-minute drive from our large Stucktaymore holiday house. This makes for a great day out during your stay with us. The centre explores prehistoric water dwellings known as crannogs, many of which have been found on Loch Tay. Visit the museum to view ancient artefacts and wander around the reconstructed Iron Age village. Join an expert-led tour to learn all about crannogs and their inhabitants of 2500 years ago.

Visitor Information

The story of the Scottish Crannog Centre

Excavations of several ancient dwellings built on the waters of Loch Tay began in the 1980s. In 1997, a reconstructed crannog was built in Kenmore, based on the findings. The free-standing wooden structure, which formed an artificial island in the loch, became the main attraction at the Scottish Crannog Centre. Sadly, a fire broke out in 2021 and destroyed the crannog. But after a huge fundraising effort, the centre is now back. Work has begun on an Iron Age village, which will see new crannogs built on the water. Crafted with local materials and using traditional skills, this is a unique and exciting project.

The centre is open daily, and guided tours of the museum and Iron Age village run regularly throughout the day. You’ll see interactive demonstrations of ancient techniques, and the knowledgable team are on hand to share their expertise and answer any questions you may have. This is a wonderful insight into the lives and skills of those who lived many centuries ago. It’s an immersive experience, allowing a glimpse into the past.
