Castle Menzies is a 16th-century Scottish castle, located in Weem near Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire. For guests staying with us at Stucktaymore, it’s just a half-hour drive away. Open for visits from around April to October each year, it’s a fantastic day out for all the family. Explore the castle, walled gardens and Old Kirk. Then enjoy refreshments in the tea room.

Castle Menzies was built in 1571 as the seat of Clan Menzies. However, there is evidence to suggest that some parts of the building come from an earlier structure called the Place at Weem. It was a family residence, but also an important stronghold. In its strategic position in central Scotland, it has had a long and turbulent history. Involved in several conflicts over the centuries, including the Jacobite risings in the 1700s. It remained in the Menzies family until 1910, when the last owner died without an heir. For a while the castle lay empty and fell into ruin, until the newly reformed Menzies Clan Society rescued it in 1957. The society purchased and restored it over time, and today it is open to the public as a visitor attraction.

The Old Kirk at Weem is located in the village of Weem, about half a mile from Castle Menzies. It has links to Clan Menzies and you can see it as part of your castle visit. Simply ask at the castle and the manager will lend you a key for a returnable deposit. Here you can view the Menzies Memorial, carved in 1616, and several other artefacts and points of interest.

The castle is open to all as a visitor attraction, museum and clan centre. All proceeds go towards its continued restoration and maintenance. Tickets include entry to the castle, walled gardens and Old Kirk. The tour is self-led, but private tours led by a historian are available for an additional fee. Please contact the castle in advance if you wish to arrange a large group visit and/or a private tour.
