Can I walk up into the highlands from Stuckgowan?

Some of the most special moments we have spent here as a family are the walks up into the wilderness behind the house. It is only right to be clear that these walks are not for the faint hearted. You will need strong boots or wellies. If you stand at our front door just turn right go up the steps and keep going left to the burn – over the bridge and you are on your own – turn uphill. Once you leave our grounds there are no paths other than those made by the wildlife that abound in the highlands. Keep kids close as there are spectacular gorges and waterfalls but it is wild Scotland – beautiful, rugged and breathtaking.. An experience not to missed but remember this is don’t at your own risk. You cant ‘health and safety’ the highlands.

How many people can sleep in Stuckgowan?

Stuckgowan sleeps 19 in full beds along with potentially 2 small beds for kids if you needed to squeeze in a couple more.

How equipped is the kitchen?

The kitchen is extremely well equipped with all you require cutlery, crockery, cooking implements, pots & pans and a full extensive range of glassware.  There is an Aga Rangemaster, microwave, 3 dishwashers, fridges, freezer, and Nespresso coffee machine.  We supply tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and some cooking ingredients which have kindly been left by past guests. We recommend you bring all the supplies you shall need.  There is a washing machine, tumble dryer and detergent is supplied for all.

How can I control the heating?

The house is centrally heated by radiators and is zoned. The ground floor thermostat is in the inner hallway and controls all ground floor rooms. The first floor stat is in OAK bedroom and controls all first floor bedrooms and bathrooms. The north wing stat is at the top of the stairs and controls the 2 bedrooms and bathroom and the lower ground floor thermostat is in the hallway outside of the gym and controls the lower ground floor.

The heating system is set to automatically come on and off at pre set times, but if you are too cold or too hot, just press the buttons on the stats to raise or lower the temperatures. In each room all radiators have temperature valves so just turn up, down or off as desired in each room, but please remember to turn back on again before you depart.

You might be pleased to know that the hot water is generated by carbon neutral biomass boiler. There is a back up system via an oil boiler should there be any problem with the biomass. Instructions on how to switch over will be given by Ronnie (07718 702 656) in the event of any problem.

How do I use the wood-burning stoves?

We have two wood burning stoves. To light the one in the dining room move the leaver under the stove door, behind the ash door to the to the top. Build a small fire in the centre of the grate. Once it has taken add a couple of dry logs on top close the door and stare longingly into the flames.

If the flames seem to die down then you are not letting enough air in, adjust accordingly. Once the fire is burning well, reduce the air by moving the lever down – this will create a far more beautiful fire and not turn the dining room into a sauna. Do be careful once lit as the handle and casings are very hot- Please use the glove provided.

The study also has a small wood burning stove, easily lit and controlled by the air lever on the top lip.Slide right for lots of air when you light the fire and then reduce the airflow by sliding it to the left. Generally follow the instructions above and adjust the air accordingly.

Is the water safe to drink?

Our water truly is Highland Spring water. It is filtered through both nylon and UV filters and tested annually by the local environmental health agency – as such it is perfectly safe. However while it is perfect for hot drinks, we do not recommend you drink it from the tap (except in whiskey). Brush your teeth with it, shower in it, bath in it etc, but we provide bottled water in your rooms and there is more in the bar area downstairs if you run out. Also the fridge has filtered cold water and ice.The water is fine for the Nespresso machine.

How can I use the Everhot cooking range?

If you have used an Aga it is the same principle, but for the novice, the range is pre-set and always on. Cook on the top by lifting the lid, with a fast plate to the left and a simmer plate to the right of each of the 2 hobs. The ovens are set with high temperature for the 2 top ovens and lower temperature for the 2 lower ovens. Cook your food in the top oven then move it to the bottom oven for warming. Everhot and Aga cooking is best done using the ovens for most things, particularly breakfasts- a tray of sausages or bacon will cook in minutes and no mess to clean up.

We also have an induction hob on the island unit just in case. you need conventional cooking, plus a microwave oven/ grill in the pantry. If you need to rustle something up for the kids best do it on the induction hob.

How does the Sonos music system work?

Music is available to the ground floor and lower ground floor through our Sonos system. This is a streamed system using wifi. To operate the sound system, the main control is in the cabinet to the left of the range cooker. You can also download the Sonos app to your smartphone and this allows you to use your phone to control the system. Our controller looks like a smart phone and is touch control. Touch the screen and work through the menu. You can play in each room designated as kitchen, dining room, drawing room, gym, games room. All have hidden speakers, which do not require any control other than the hand controller. You can use your own iPod by docking it to the drawing room or dining room docks or select music on line from our Napster account or play any radio station you select. Play with it and experience something amazing, but please re-dock the handset as it will die within a few hours and you will lose control of the system. (Please note some guests have gotten a little carried away and downloaded the app to multiple devices and tried to operate them all simultaneously. This will confuse the master controller and could crash the system. Please for your own enjoyment, ensure responsible use of this superb music system facility).

How does the cinema system work?

WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU NOMINATE ONE GUEST ONLY TO OPERATE THE CONTROLS. THIS IS NOT A TV REMOTE, IT IS A COMPUTER CONTROL POINT AND DOES NOT REACT FAST. AT THE START IT NEEDS 2 MINUTES TO WARM UP THE SYSTEM BEFORE YOU CAN SELECT ITEMS TO WATCH.

Our cinema room is a place to play games on the Xbox kinect, or to watch TV or films or to listen to music or radio. This is a fully computer controlled system through various components and a high resolution projector, so it takes a little time to warm up. The one controller does everything so please do not lose it. When you reach the room, press the main lighting control by the door to raise the full lighting levels. Read the full instructions outside the door. Lift the controller and press the centre red 4 button. Give the projector a few minutes to warm up and the choices are then shown on screen. Move the arrow cursors on screen to WATCH and the next choices are FAVORITE CHANNELS, FREESAT CHANNELS, MOVIES, XBOX,BLU RAY etc. Move the arrow cursors on the control and then press select. Make your selection and press select and then all other controls are prompted.

We have 100+ films on our library hard drives, just select and play. Alternatively put a DVD or Blu-ray into the Xbox One and select from the controller. For games use the Xbox and insert a game, then select using the controller, then use the xbox paddles for the game.If asked for a password use top left paddle button x 4 times. If you require any other download services use the Xbox menu, but film streaming is only available using your own account for Netflix, Lovefilm,Sky Go, etc.

There is a blu-ray player in the control cupboard just for 3d films as xbox one now plays bluray or dvd. It should ONLY be used for blu ray HD or 3D discs. Please do not alter any controls.

When you are ready to watch or play, go to the wall mounted lighting control and press any of the 5 buttons to select your mood lighting, then relax and enjoy cinema style entertainment. Don’t worry if the walls shake, they are built to withstand it.

When completed press ROOM OFF on the controller to close down the systems. (Do not restart immediately, as the projector will always cool down before starting up again and this will take several minutes). When you leave the room please place the hand controller back in the charging base then press the off controller outside the door and this will close down the lighting system.

Note: if the sub woofer bass speaker on the ground does not light up, press the power button on the speaker. If the XBOX does not go off with room off, press the green power button.

There are intake and extract ventilation systems for the cinema and the gym. See the controls by each door. Please remember to switch off when you leave these rooms.

Are there toys for the children to play with?

We have our very own playroom downstairs on the lower ground floor. There are a selection of toys and games are available in and on the kitchen units. Let the children enjoy themselves but please have them tidy up afterwards. Any toys taken to other areas of the house should be returned to the play room when you depart.

What facilities are there for babies?

A selection of baby items, bottle warmers, high chairs, travel cots, bedding etc is in the hall cupboard under the stairs that lead to the lower ground floor.

What equipment do you have in the gym?

This little room could help to shake off the excesses of the previous night. There is a cross trainer with a selection of programmes, a set of conventional weights, a Pilates roll ball, exercise mats, skipping rope etc. Use the room carefully and definitely NOT for unsupervised children.

How do I use the Jaccuzzi?

The hot tub is a perfect way to end the day, but use it carefully. We recommend that all children are supervised and do not try to swim in it due to the chemical balance. Hot tubs are dangerous if abused or overused so follow instructions carefully.

The hot tub will be on and cleaned on your arrival. The temperature is set at 37.5 degrees. Fold back the 2 stage insulating cover and remove it. Press button 1, then press it again. This will activate the first pumps. If you want more pressure, press button 2 once. This will activate the boost pump. The pumps will stay on for about 20 minutes. If you want to stay in longer, press the sequence again. Two by 20 minute sessions are the maximum you should use at any one time.

If using at night press the light button and the led lighting will come on. Press it again to change the colour or theme. There are around 8 scenes.

Once completed, please switch off the lighting and replace the insulated lid, ensuring all bottom edges are pulled down around the casing. If you leave the pool open all heat will dissipate and the pool will not reach perfect operating temperature.

Please ensure nobody sits or walks on the pool cover as this is only insulating foam. Long periods of use daily see the pool chlorine levels dropping dramatically. We have the pool balanced daily but have now added an automatic dosing system. If the pool is heavily used the chlorine levels will rise so please protect your eyes. Small sessions and then a break of use will allow the system to balance itself and this will ensure you have a crystal clear pure pool to enjoy.

Do you have a barbeque?

We have taken note of comments from guests and now have a charcoal BBQ which will be put out for guest use during the April- October months. We would prefer you use the barbeque in the area it is stored and it is really difficult to remove charcoal stains form the terrace. A bag of charcoal will be in the log store. Please put foil in the bottom tray and empty before you leave.

Troublesome midges? (Midgies)

Between May and September the west of Scotland is home to the famous ‘Midgies’. If it is windy, sunny or really warm – then they are unlikely to be a problem.

With our woodland and foliage we can be troubled by these annoying little beasties. They rise early and are worse after rainfall with temperatures below 20 degrees C. When it is hot, over 20 degree they disappear.

Best solution is prevention, Local folk law recommends Avon Skin So Soft as is seems to stop them bugging you. Supplies are in the pantry and can be purchased in the local shops in Arrochar and Luss. Some midge head nets are also in the cupboard and extras are available in the local shops. Please leave after use, for future guests. We have installed a midge buster machine on the terrace to try and alleviate the problem. Please do not move or touch this machine, it is left on. It operates on gas bottles and our maintenance man will check this regularly. This will only be operational during the midge season from May- September.

Please do not leave any windows or doors open during midge season.

Can we access Loch Lomond?

There are some lovely walks along the shore

If you exit our main gate and turn left – past our neighbours entrance there is a wooden gate where you can get down to the loch. It’s a great place for some pictures.

If you exit our main gate and turn right you, take the first road left down to the water’s edge and there is a lovely walk to Firkin point and for the more adventurous keep going to the Inn on the Loch

The cottage opposite our entrance on the A82 is privately owned. Despite their proximity to the A82 they do like their peace and quiet – please be considerate.

We need to point out that the loch over the A82 outside of our gates is very deep and dangerous for swimming or boating due to strong underwater currents. Please be careful crossing the road and please do not wander onto our neighbour’s private land.

What if there is – no heating, no water, no power or if the fire alarms go off?

For any faults or breakdowns you will need to phone Ronnie on 07718 702 656. Most queries can be resolved by phone, but if a call out is needed it may take 1 hour to get to you.

Potential Problems.

1. No heating– check that all stats are showing a flame. If they are the boiler trip has activated. Call Ronnie (07718 702 656). There are some electric fires in the understairs cupboard to give you some heating. Light the fires in the principle rooms to ensure you have warmth.

2. No water– check all taps to ensure they are turned OFF. If one tap or one WC is left running the internal storage tank will run dry. Open one tap. If no water flow at all then the pump has tripped and needs resetting. Call Ronnie (07718 702 656).

3. No electricity– if it is one circuit a breaker will have tripped. Go to the secondary distribution board by the terrace door and check that all breakers are on. If so go to the main distribution board in the mud room and check that all breakers are on. Resetting should clear any faults.

4. No power/ water/ wifi/ tv/etc.– In the unlikely event of a power cut due to adverse weather or fallen trees, we regret everything will go off as all systems have electrical controls. Our supplier is Scottish Hydro/ Scottish & Southern Energy. Their emergency number is 0800 727282 .

5. Fire Alarms go off.– These are located at: first floor- above each shower room. Ground floor: centrally in the long hallway. North wing bedrooms: in the hallway. Lower ground floor: in the hallway and in the playroom/kitchen. Make sure everyone proceeds to an exit door- front door, terrace door, back door. One person should then check each detector point, armed with a fire extinguisher from the main hall cupboard or the kitchen. If the pilot light is green the detector is fine. If the pilot light is red, this is the one which has sensed a problem. Ensure there is no fire and press the reset button to silence the alarms. As this is a mains system with battery back up all alarms will continue to ring until either the smoke/ fire/ heat detection has dispersed naturally or until the offending detector is reset.

6. No telephone or wi-fi. All overhead cables have now been put underground so in the unlikely event of the whole house wi-fi system going down it is an area problem. BT speeds in this area are not good and we operate at around 2mbs which makes things slow if a lot of wifi is being used. It operates well for music but film download takes a long time. If things go off check that the phone line is working or call BT faults and report it.

7. Security Systems. The house has a security system and cameras which record externally. There are no internal cameras.

If any of your guests have accidentally damaged anything, please leave a note for Lorraine who arranges our cleaning service or Ronnie who looks after the house and grounds. What is Ronnie’s number?

Ronnie is available on 07718 702 656 for any maintenance issues. Ronnie will be found working in the grounds of the estate on weekdays.

What do we do when we leave?

We would appreciate it if you would lock the window catches and close all shutters on the ground floor and lower ground floor when you leave. Please place the house keys into the masterlock box, then spin the dials. Please ensure the terrace door and back door are locked and the keys left hanging, not in the doorlock. Thank you so much and we do hope you enjoyed your stay.

Alternatively if you take the path up the hill from the coach house and head straight up hill (not towards the gate – we have cut a path for you to explore. This will take you up into the hill behind Stuckdarach. After about 600 meters it will come to an end and then your route is up to you. In the event of any problem please call Ronnie (07718 702 656).

How do I use the wood-burning stoves?

To light the one in the lounge move the leaver on the right to maximize airflow. The fire will be set as you arrive. If you are lighting a second fire then build a small fire in the centre of the grate. Once it has taken add a couple of dry logs on top, close the door.

A selection of baby items, bottle warmers, high chairs, travel cots, bedding, etc is in the hall cupboard under the stairs that lead to the lower ground floor.

How do I use the Jaccuzzi?

The hot tub is a perfect way to end a day, but use it carefully. We recommend that children are supervised at all times and not allowed to swim in it due to the chemical balance. Hot tubs are dangerous if overused so follow the instructions carefully. The hot tub will be cleaned, balanced and on for your arrival. It is set for 37.5degrees. Fold back the insulated cover until it is standing up at the back. Press the control panel once to start the pump, then press again for the booster. If you want more power press button 2 once. The pumps will run for about 20 minutes. If you need more time, press again, but DO NOT use for more than 2 sessions, then allow at least an hour to allow the tub to rebalance chemicals. If using at night press the button for the led lights. There are several lighting programmes. Music can be played by blue tooth from your phone or ipod. Turn on Bluetooth, connect to AQUATIC AV and play your music in the hot tub speakers. When finished, switch everything off and replace the lid. If you do not replace the cover, the pool will not reach operating temperature.  Do not turn off the main isolator switch. Please do not use the hot tub with fake tan or make up on as this will come off and the water will go cloudy. Please do not use glass in the hot tub, plastic glasses only for outside use are in the bar area. Towels for hot tub use are in the wardrobe in the wet room shower. Please use the outside stand to keep the towels off the ground and wash them in the laundry room after use.  You should use the wet room shower after using the hot tub to remove any chemicals from your body.

Do you have a barbeque?

A GAS BBQ has been added to the terrace, just switch on the gas bottle and light from the knobs and red button on the front panel. Please clean after each use.

Is there good parking?

There is plenty of parking in the gravel car park which is illuminated at night.   There is parking for several cars to the front and side of the house.

Is there WIFI?

Wifi is throughout the house and will be found on your phone as Stucktaymore. The password is in the House Manual.  Broadband in the country areas is slow so if everyone is using a wifi device everything will slow down or stop working. We have 14 devices already signed in to the WiFi system to give you music and TV services. Adding 10 or more devices of your own WILL slow everything down. Average speed is only 3.5mbs.

Are there grounds to enjoy or the kids to play in?

We know you will enjoy the gardens to sit or to play in. The front lawns are great to play areas and they also have a number of fruit trees, containing Apples, Plums, Pears and Cherry. If they are ripe and in the season you are welcome to pick but leave some for the next guests. The trees produce late so it’s August and September for the best crops.
The Poly-tunnel has strawberries and vegetable crops and the planter boxes have herbs, potatoes, and rhubarb.
The woodlands have walkways throughout and can be lit at night, there are 2 large fire pit areas, one up the hill for sitting out and one down the hill which we use for a barbeque. Logs are with each fire pit. Makeup with paper and kindling and a firelighter, then add logs. When the logs are embers, place the grids over the stones and you can cook. BBQ tools are in the mudroom. It’s easier to use paper plates and plastic cups for the BBQ as these can be burnt after use. The green cushions in the mudroom are to take down to sit on. When complete please return all cushions and cooking items and ensure the fire is out before you go back to the house.

What if there is – no heating, no water, no power or if the fire alarms go off?
